or is it 20" and make a new mid etc
or try to fit a 60-70 onto to a 50D mid but what about the trim?

New parts for a short Yamaha 3cyl 70 are still available, but you'd have to piece it together.. Buying these parts new isn't very cheap.
Start with a 20in 70hp, find a used 55hp small lower unit, then get the short mid parts: driveshaft, water tube, shifter, and the main one: 15in upper casing. Some of those you may be able to just make out of the long shaft parts, but the driveshaft and upper casing (mid section) are available new.

They did. Older Mariner 60hp (I have one in hand), and I think the newer 50G 850cc 50hp in the UK.

Perhaps rebuilding an OMC 49ci powerhead and buy mid+trim and lower from Seaway is the way to go?
Carbs are the only thing that might to hard to find or use flat tops?
