OK, now that you've looked at the list, if you have any biographical info on any of them, please feel free to add a post to the end of this thread!

*NOTE: We need at least one small bit of biographical info for each name. The names alone can come from old APBA & NOA membership rosters, but that is meaningless. Please help each entry be known for their accomplishments.

Our Who's Who List is by no means a complete list ... and as long as there is boat racing never will be complete!

This list is not a public domain document, it is owned by the owners of www.boatracingfacts.com; you may not copy it to other web sites without proper attribution ... you may not publish it or excerpts from it in other documents without PRIOR WRITTEN PERMISSION of Ted March and Ron Hill the copyright holders. Hey, you work fast! I've got that pic in poster size in my garage. For those who don't know Bale was the fastest guy on the water from 1967 untill he died in 1973. In a 200mph drag boat? No! In a rubber raft in the Walnut Creek cannal. My (pregnant) mother was a close friend and at the funeral Ma Bale suggested that it would be nice if the baby were named after Bale. So one week later, out I came, Bradley Dwight. Actually Dago thought I should have been called Luigi but thats another story. For more info and pics of the Bales, the surviving brother Laurence put together a great memorial page: www.narberthpa.com/Bale/bmp/dwb.htm

    Default Tommy Newton

FYI: This Encyclopedia isn't going to FORGET ANYONE.....So keep adding names. When I can get ENCYCLOPEDIA SOFTWARE, we'll get real serious...

I was just going to tell what I knew about Tommy Newton.

As far as I know, his real claim to fame was building "C" Service Evinrudes.

Seems Tommy worked for the water department in Lampoc (Which they tried to call LamPOCK, but WC Fields changed it to Lampoc, and finally the city agreed with WC Fields... Anyway, Tommy's main job was to keep and eye on the DAM and make sure the level of the water was correct for the pumps. Basically, mornings he'd check the level and adjust a valve, if needed, then go home and work on Service C motors. Then, in the evening, he'd go check the level again.

I may not have all the details right, but Tommy had time on his hands. He also built Evinrude C Stock (GAS BURNERS) motors for guys like Ron Loomis, who at the time was from Santa Barbara, close to Lampoc.

Tommy Newton built engine for Manny Carnakis, Mayor of Bakersfield and the builder of Lake Ming, Henry Wagner of Fresno and Jimmy Hauenstein's 1964 C Service National Champion engine.... I asked Jimmy why he raced C Service? Ronnie, Jim said, "It's a GENTLEMAN'S class." When you look back on the class..Jimmy was right.

Tommy's C Service Evinrude could be compared to today's Rolex watches...

    Default Georgio Molinari

Well, I want to make sure not to come off wrong here, but Georgio Molinari's racing claim to fame, as I recall, is that he is Renato's younger brother....

I have not seen him since 1970, but he was handsome compared to Renato, looked more like Angelo.

Georgio may have gotten bad raps about his driving because Renato was "THE KING" at that time...

Georgio seemed to "BLOW OVER" a lot. The best story, see Scotti was Renato's cousin and Scotti's boat factory was next door to Molinari's factory. Molinari could only sell to Mercury and Scotti could only sell to OMC......But the employees worked for whoever had orders for boats.

As the Molinari team loads up for Paris (The 6 Hour) 1969, Georgio decides to take one last test ride in his boat. Well, he blew it over, tore the fire out it...Renato....Carlo Racini....Angelo and all leave for Paris without Georgio....

The guys at both factories start working on Georgio's boat, they fix it in an all nighter, paint it and he shows up for Paris on Friday, and paint is still wet on the boat... Don't recall how he did, but do recall that those Italians had some FINE looking women!!!!

    Talking Tommy Newton

    Hey Ron,

Tommy Newton lived in the hills behind Santa Barbara. I used to go up there every day during the summer to build my first engine with his direct supervision. I used to polish and polish things like transfer ports and and crankcase openings. I used to ask him if he thought that would help much and he would say "no", but keep doing it. Then it was the inside of the crankcase and I would ask the same question and he would answer "no, it won't help much". Then I balanced the crank and rods and the answer was the same. I really had a hard time polishing the rods, but when all the balancing, polishing and everything else was done he reminded me that it was all those little things added together that made the difference. It sure did. Couple of Nationals, couple of records, and a couple of 1-US's I could directly attribute to him.

I don't think I will ever get over a machine shop with oriental rugs on the floor...and a vacuum hose next to every machine that created grindings or dust.

What a great teacher he was.

    Ron

ps - You are right about his "job" was that of monitoring water flow from the mountains...except they were in SB not Lompoc.
