    Default Hal Needham Interview

    http://www.nascar.com/content/nascar/en_us/news-media/articles/2013/10/26/nascar-owner-hollywood-stuntman-hal-needham-dies.html

Hal Needham has been dead for three years but I heard an interesting interview on Sirius NASCAR Radio #90 the other day. They asked Hal how he got the idea about the movie Smokey and the Bandit. His answer didn't make sense as he said they got some Coors out in the Mid West, and he had it in his refrigerator in South Carolina and the maid kept steeling it. If he didn't drink beer why would he have had Coors in his refrigerator?

Smokey and the bandit came out in 1977. Jimmy Dawe owned the Couple Up Bar in Needles (Lots of train people would drink there....trains 'couple up' you know)..

Well at Dayton, 1974, Dave Bryan was walking down the beach with a six pack of Coors and somebody like Freddy Miller offered him two six packs of Old Style Export for one six pack of Coors.

So, in 1975, when the Nationals were going to be in Dayton again, Jimmy got the great idea of taking 150 cases of Coors to Dayton to sell. Well, in those days, you had to keep Coors ice cold or it went bad. So, Jimmy heads out of Needles with 150 cases of Coors, loaded with ice and Heads fr Dayton. Just before he leaves, the neighbor girl, 15 years old, asks Jimmy if she can go with him. Jimmy says, "Get a note from your mom." The girl gets a note from her mom and Jimmy, the 15 year old girl, 150 cases of Coors head to Dayton, Ohio. Jimmy was pulling the trailer with his Corvette.

Dave and Jimmy were going to split a motel room. Dave flew in to Dayton and got to the motel. He looks at this young girl and says, "How old are you?" She says, "15". Dave doesn't set his suit case down, turns around and went to the office to get his own room.

This picture is of Dave Bryan and me in Dayton, 1975
