    Default Rotary

Come to think of it.......I knew an ex OMC employee who was supposed to have aquired a Johnson Rotary complete. Well wouldn't ya know this was right when OMC closed its doors. He figured that the dang thing must have been stranded on the loading dock and he never got it. This could be the same motor and someone else has the powerhead.

Someone REALLY wants it bad. It's at $5,000.00 now.
Looking at inside of the pan I don't see how the motor bolts down to the mid.

Make that two people want it bad ... if there is just one high bidder we never see the top ... bidders 6 & 7 are both over $5k
Since 1925, about 150 different racing outboards have been made.

As far as how the motor bolts into the mid, that would be a question for Ziggy or one of the other guys who actually worked on them.

I'm looking at that lower unit ... it just doesn't look as big as the one in the pictures from when Strang showed the motor to Herr Wankle. Maybe it's just the camera angle and color, but the one on eBay's prop nut doesn't seem to be close to where the real one is.

    Default question???

Besides Jimbo, who else ever raced one? I had never even seen one until a few months ago when I came across the pictures of Jimbo.

I'm guessing they didn't run very well?

The bottom rotor/troquoid(splg?) bolted directly to the gearcase, probably through an adaptor. This created a problem as sitting in the water waiting to start, this rotor was essentially under water. So Leek & company designed/rigged a fuel pump to act as a pump to keep water out while running. Don't recall what they did while just sitting.

John, I seem to remember some duct tape covering some places where water could get in while waiting in the pits. It may be they pulled the tape right before the start & let the pump do its work, because I don't recall any pictures with duct tape while they were running. But I do remember looking at one and the conversation in the pits about that bottom rotor housing below the water. Maybe Joe has a clearer picture of what they did. If I could find Harry Echols and he still had my negatives we could look at a picture of one sitting in the water about 20' away.
