9 time Word Champion Guido CAPPELLINI is the best from the present, and I would also add Timmy and Mike, some other names being noted in this post make me laugh….

The thread is best OPC racer not tunnel boat driver. The Guido thing has been done. Lets let others give their opinion.

    Default I'm very predjudiced, but....

When you look at the bazillion dollars Mercury budgeted every year since 1950 into racing, and then you look at the point where OMC made their comeback into the sport, with a very limited budget, you need to look at their drivers harder than any of the Merc guys.

I'm not aking away from Seebold's natural talents, but it is relativley easy when you have an un limited budget, to run cirlces around your competion, whose company does not spend nearly as much.

Those drivers talents are more at credit than the drivers with bottomless pits of money.

There is my reasoning, hence my drivers.

#1, Jimbo, (191) hands down dubbed wizzard of OZ, and who ever could barrel roll an open Goat boat, swim to the boat, start it, and still win the race? Or maybe he took 3rd, but that should be a win in anyones book.

#2 are two guys. Ron Hill, (9) and Johnny Sanders. (196) The tallies of wins and feats they pulled during their tenure driving for OMC was unmatched by any number of drivers. The one that comes to mind more than any was Ron winning the Chicago to Milwaukee marathon, pulling to shore and having the boat break in half after he won. Sanders, won the 1972 World Outboard Championship on a day when no sane person should have been running a tunnel. His crew installed a club foot gearcase on his boat, which was heavier, and slower, to keep him in the water. He still managed to average a 76.430 MPH speed, using a Stinger GP.

#3 Ted May. (54) The old Hell Cat. When I used to read about him, and after I listened to his philosophies, I use many of those when teaching KT about her boat. The best, If you wreck your boat today, you can't race tomorrow. And, once out in front, he made it near impossible for anyone to get by him.

What these guys did, was done on a fraction of the Mercury Racing budget and I don't write it that way to take anything away from the Merc guys, it's simply the truth.
