Random shots from the pits

Can someone tell me if the RILEY 75 horsepower outboard motor was a 2 stroke , or 4 stroke ? it was a RADIAL 5 cylinder made in mid 50's , or ,at least ADVERTISED then . All i ever saw was a PICTURE of it , then it seemed to dissapear .

The Riley was a 4 stroke based on an aircraft motor. Peter Hunn's Old Outboard book has information on it

That is me to the right of Bob's knee. Not sure who is next to me, maybe Duwayne Timm, next to him looks like Ron Baker then Dick Ingebretsen. I think that is Dick's wife, Anita, in the boat. I belive our wives were with us when Bob blew over. It was real scary. You could see it coming and I think we were moving as he was going over. I think I was in the water first and I thought Bob was gone.

I just looked at the shot again and see my wifes head above Anita. I guess they both were in the boat.

Any chance I could get a print of that shot?

I thought he was gone too. It was the worst I ever personally witnessed. You guys were right there. I saw it coming to and had time to focus my 500mm lens. I had not been taking pictures until after my run. My motor drive was set on 1.5 frames per second instead a 3.5, otherwise I would have burnt a whole roll of film on this. I only realized it when I pushed the the button and instead of shoop-shoop-shoop-shoop, the camera was going ka-chunk ka-chunk ka-chunk. Guess I need to take the time and put that series up in the splash section one of these days.

This was the spread published in the September 1976 issue of Powerboat. Word spread like wildfire about that "SafeJacket" Bob was wearing. The next time we were in the pits there were a whole bunch of us wearing them.

Here are a couple of shots. Bob Hering with the "Safe Jacket" and how it fits underneath the life jacket. I don't know how long Bob had been wearing one, but he credited it with lessening the severity of his injuries. The boat racers up North knew how to find them, as many of them raced snowmobiles during the winter. It was either Tim Butts or one of the Kirts' that helped us locate a source.

I am thinkin thats what the guys in region 11 were calling "flak jackets " about that time . I did NOT have one , when i rolled my boat in the corner at Stockton, & i paid with 2 or 3 cracked ribs . hurt for a month. I did not go to doc or emergency , as my wife (deceased) was a registered nurse, & she said i gonna hurt for a month , no matter what . She was right .
