This was taken in September of 1997 and I think the occasion was Pops 80th birthday. How many years (centurys?) of combined boat racing experience are in the picture.

BTW. Nice bunny ears there Mike...

Top left looks like Ronnie Hill's dad Russ Hill, Sr. Next to him looks like Mel Kirts. Second from the right looks like Johnny Dortch.
Bottom row from the lrft is Bill DeSilva, Ralph DeSilva & Dick O'Dea.

You got most of them John. It turned out kind of a trick question because I only looked at the contact sheet before I posted it and wrote that it was California guys. I didn't realize my error until it blew up after I posted it. You picked out some of the others. What a great group of guys. But I don't think that's Russ Hill Sr. Now who are the others?

looks like Bill Rucker sr. in the back row.

I will have to dig out my pics from that race, it was really cool to see the racers from Germany, Sweden ect.

I do remember Bill Rucker sure did give that big Konig river boat a good run for the money in F hydro.

He did for a fact Carl. They tied in points and it was decided on time. I was surprised Bill didn't make it to Fort Worth the following year for a rematch. Look hard for your pics, then get em posted. And you are correct about Bill in the back row.

    Default Billy Jack...the Original

How can anyone call Billy Jack Rucker, Bill Rucker? He was one of the first people that I met when I started racing. I do not think Bill Jr. had even begun his great career yet? Billy Jack was one tough dude. That big six looked like it was real tough to drive. When it was running right, I do not think I ever saw a boat faster on the straightaways. Looked like torque city around the turns.
Top right...could it be the great builder of that engine, Lon Stevens?
Hey Carl Lewis, did you come to Bakersfield without cruising down to see us?
I wish I could have done a better job driving the new hydro that Ralph and Bill built for the Phoenix race.

However my oldest son was there helping out, as I didn't have his boat ready yet....bad dad...

any way I did find a good pic of you a few days ago and when I can figure out how to work this new scanner I will post some pics.

hey give me a call one of these days since you never seem to be home when I call. thinking about sending you an answering machine!!!! (haha)

    Carl
