    Default 45 Cone nut sticking

    Hey Guys,

Need some thoughts. We went to put a seal kit in my current 45 gearcase as it keeps getting water in the gear oil. The conenut turns about 2 full revolutions and then locks up hard. It will tighten back up no problem, but for some reason stops at about the two revolution mark on the way out. I need to get it out to change the cone nut seals and I was planning on putting a new set of gears in it too.

Anyone have any ideas to get it out without tearing up the cone nut or the gearcase? We have tried a heat gun. I guess the torch or cutting the cone nut would be a last resort, but Sea Way is out of the conenut for the newer cases.

If we have to cut the cone nut, does anyone have a cone nut I can buy from them to get this back together? I will be picking up my new case that Joe Phillips is shaping for me next week so this unit will become my backup. I'd like to have it for Port Neches in case something goes wrong.

    Thanks,

    Steve.

Pops is right, you're locking on the set screws. I'm surpirsed you got 2 turns.

The procedure is to pull the water pump, pull off the top half of the gearcase and there will be a hole near the rear with 2 allen head set screws. Take 'em out and the cone should come out fairly easliy.

Also check the top seals as sometimes the water pump can push past a bad top seal and use a sealant when you reassemble the two halves of the gearcase.

    Good luck.

Thanks guys. We feel like idiots now. We will make sure the allen set screws are out. Crap. I guess that is what we get for being Mercury guys trying to wrench on a damn OMC!!!!!

We already tried replacing just the two seals under the water pump and it still leaked so I went ahead and got a complete seal kit from Sea Way.

Thanks. Hopefully, we won't need a cone nut now.

Steve if you didnt know about the locks on the cone nut than you are flying blind and you probably better get some help putting that gearcase back together, especially if you change the gears or you are going to end up with a pile of scrap you just put a bunch of money into.
You need to shim them properly when you put it back together or it will eat it's self up.

It is not just a matter of taking it apart throwing some seals in it and putting it back together the way it came apart.

Thanks Jeff. I have someone tracking down the tech manual on it to be sure we get the lash and all other tolerences correct. Thanks for the thoughts.

    Steve,
