Dixon clean sweep in Port Alfred
Written by Paul Bedford, on 17-05-2008 17:42

The Dixon Premium Batteries F1 Powerboat team continued their winning ways in Port Alfred this afternoon when their pilots filled the first three places on the grid and then raced to a one-two-three finish in the day's only heat. Defending South African champion Paul Shepard took pole position after Tim Fetherstonhaugh (Team Remax) had his qualifying lap disallowed after he recieved assistance from his pit crew inbetween his two timed qualifying attempts. Shepard's Dixon {remium Batteries team mate Brett Stuart qualified second with his brother Robert in third. Once the flag dropped to signal the start of the first heat it was Robert who charged to the front. When they crossed the start-finish line for the first time Robert had a slight lead over Paul with Brett Stuart and Tim Fetherstonhaugh in close attendance.

Accident delays proceedings in Port Alfred
Written by Paul Bedford, on 16-05-2008 17:06

Bruce Repsold brings his damaged boat back to shoreAn accident, once again involving this season's unluckiest pilot Bruce Repsold, earlier today has resulted in time trials to determine grid positions for this weekend's Cacadu F1 Powerboat Grand Prix in Port Alfred being postponed. During practice Repsold, who was unsighted driving into the sun, hit a boat belonging to Nature Coservation that had strayed onto the racing line. Luckily neither Repsold nor the Nature Conservation staff members were injured although both boats were seriously damaged. Time trials will now take place late tomorrow morning with the first of the three heats being run tomorrow afternoon. The other two heats will take place as scheduled on Sunday.

this one wasn't so lucky. thoughts are with our brotherens family.

I recived the UIM results as usual from UIM yesterday, and it was a very unusual and sad, yet - in some way good list that came up. Janos Feil won his last race. He died at top of his game, as a current European and World Champion in 350 - as President of the Hungarian federation and as the winner of his last and final race, Boretto Po.

So sorry to hear this. What a champion...what a loss for this sport. My sincere sympathies to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

The video tribute to him is really tough to watch... get some tissues.

On the F2boat.com page there's also a discussion about a 2 seater boat crashing, but both occupants were ok. Sounds like perhaps a sponson came off after hitting something??

    This is what Frode says:
"....Michael hit something in the water, and that can happen for us all, the most famouse driver in the World, Mr Bill Seebold rolled it over with a guest inside as well, so – it can happen to all. Mr Kent Rohm has checked the boat, tested the boat – and re build the boat as good he could, and his skills are 2nd to non. The boat is from 1998 according to contract – and is not been modified from raceboat to VIP boat, but build for its job, with a UIM approved cockpit. Michael has invested a lot of time in study for this project, so even he had an accident in first round out, Im sure he will return, smarter and even more careful. To run with people in the boat, is the greatest responsability you can have as a raceboat driver. Others lives are in your hand. Thats why we, at F2boat.com had proffesional team around us, from carbon experts to engine builders etc. There is nothing like too much checking on a VIP boat. We wish Michael best of luck, and Im sure – the girl that was riding with him, will have a new one – now with 2 sponsons ;-)"

On the inboard hydro front, Greg Hopp won in Washington. I love watching Greg drive - he can really nail those starts....

But the event also included an accident...This one with a happier ending:

"...One accident Saturday caused significant damage to two teams, but serious injuries were avoided. A graduate of Kennewick's Kamiakmin High School, Vince Xaudaro was in the cockpit of the UL-929 when the steering wheel came off its mount. The boat ran up and over the center of J. Craig Fletcher's UL-13. Fletcher's boat had gone dead in the water earlier in the heat."
