Default Eastern Divisionals-PRO Sprinfield, Ill 1977

The Brinkman's put on a fine show at Springfield. The trip from the pits to the water was a little rocky, but it was a good course and run very well. We didn't do any good at all, but we had a great time. Jack Chance tried to help someone rigging up a boat, but he said he didn't need help, he knew what he was doing. Never saw him before and don't know if he continued racing. He was winding the steering cable the wrong way on the hub. We watched as he pulled out of the pits. He started a right hand turn, but the hydro went left. He panicked and turned hard right and the hydro made a sharp left and ran into the rocks.

It was a nice racecourse, and the turnout was very good.

Default UIM World Championships Phoenix 1976

Some of the foreigners created quite a stir when in town. The Swedes weren't arrested, but the cops did explain to them it was illegal to swim in the hotel pool in the nude. I thought Leif Ahlborg already knew that, but then...Arizona IS just next door to California. And German Hans Krage discovered that the big busted waitress in the hotel bar wasn't amused when he poured a pitcher of ice on her chest.

    Default Hans and the Waitress

There is more to the story, the waitress thought that she was the hotest thing in town, and Hans just thought that he would cool her down a bit by pouring a bucket of ice down the front of her blouse. I think that the police agreed but they couldn't say so. But Hans had most of the fun as usual.

Default AOF Marine Creek Lake 1978

Marine Creek Lake is near Fort Worth. Pete DeLackner used to live only a couple of miles from this fine race course.

A funny story from this race. I didn't know a lot of these guys and I don't remember names, but here is what happened.

At the driver's meeting a lady came up and whispered something in the announcer's ear. The announcer then proceeded to tell the audience "Somebody borrowed a tap and die set from Mrs. ??? and she needs it now. She forgot who she loaned it to so she asked me to make the announcement.". No reply from the audience. "Now, whoever out there has it needs to bring it back. She was kind enough to loan it, and now she needs it, so who has it?" Again silence. Everyone was just standing there. Then the announcer started giving measurements with his hands as he spoke."It is in a black box........about this long.....about this wide..." The he abruptly stopped. He turned to the lady and said, "I have it!" and the audience erupted in laughter.
