Mercury Racing 525 EFIs and CNC Props Power 131.981 MPH Run
FOND DU LAC, Wis
., Jan. 5, 2009 – Paul Whittier of Yarrow Point, Wash., and veteran throttleman Bob Teague of Valencia, Calif., recently piloted TEAM AMSOIL #77, a Skater 368 catamaran powered by twin Mercury Racing 525 EFI engines coupled with Mercury Racing dry-sump Six drives and Mercury Racing CNC cleaver propellers, to set a new POPRA (Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Association) Offshore Cat Lite World Kilo Speed Record at 131.981 mph.
The record was set on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at the POPRA Salton Sea Speed Week Kilo Event. The Salton Sea, a body of water in the Southern California desert, has been host to many races and kilo runs over the decades and was once a top destination for boating, swimming and family fun in the late 1950s.
Kilo speed records, certified by the American Power Boat Association (APBA) and the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), require back-to-back speed runs over a straight-line, one kilometer course. The record is the average of the two consecutive speed runs.
About a dozen teams came out with high hopes that the unique environment would prove to be the ideal setting for squeezing every last drop of speed out of their boats. The combination of below-sea-level air density, extremely high salinity in the water, cool

desert air and a perfectly undisturbed body of water made the perfect formula for world record-breaking speeds.
first run on Saturday proved to be good enough to break the previous Cat Lite world kilo speed record of 126.703 mph held by Bob Bull of Merritt Island, Fla. Teague and Whittier tried various propellers and set-ups throughout the day in attempt to better their speed.
"We tried everything this year, and we always came back to Mercury Racing CNC props based on acceleration, lap times and top speed. Mercury Racing props are always 4 to 5 seconds faster. For us, Mercury Racing CNC props are our only choice now," said Teague.
By the end of Saturday, the new speed record stood at 131.319 mph. On Sunday, TEAM AMSOIL made several more runs and was successful once more at breaking their own speed record for the new POPRA Cat Lite World Kilo Speed Record of 131.981 mph, certified by APBA/UIM.
Offshore Racing has had a near perfect racing season and can now add POPRA World Speed Record Holder to its list of accomplishments in the Cat Lite category. The Team has earned the 2008 titles of SBI World Champion, Cat Lite High Points Champion in the OPA Racing Circuit, Winner of the Geico Triple Crown, Offshore Super Series National Champion and High Points Champion.
