Honing the big end of the connecting rod to loosen it up has been proven to work. In the US, it is necessary to do to make a 302 equal to a 102.
Since 1925, about 150 different racing outboards have been made.

Sam says "In the US, it is necessary to do to make a 302 equal to a 102"..........

..................oh really????? Seems there are quite a few 302 out here that have not had the rods honed and there are just as fast and faster as 102's..........

PS: BTW, if you do not have to conform to any rules or specs, there is a LOT that can be done to the 302 to make it faster!!! The motor is WAY over built and WAY restricted in its ability, but thats what makes it so damn reliable!!!!!

I'd say ... are you sure? It seems like the majority of those delivered to the east coast do need to be "fixed" before they are competitive
