It has been done more than once
Since 1925, about 150 different racing outboards have been made.

Here's my 1969 16'6" Stevens running a '76 Merc 1500 shortie. Not exactly what you were asking about (converting an inboard to an outboard), but couldn't resist. Great ski boat but hard riding in rough water. It's a lot of fun on the many flat water days we get on the TN river. I bought this boat in 1971 or 72 and recently bought it back and restored it.

    Default rayson craft

i have a 16ft rayson craft outboard hull really similar to your stevens outboard , flat bottom with a merc 135hp outboard short shaft and a 125hp lower end, it tops out at 60mph which i think is impressive, your right a lot of fun on a calm day , nothing like your boat just barely on the water

    Default SK Outboards

I have wondered how many of the SK outboard hulls were sold. I've been on the East coast alll my time, so realize my exposure to the SK style of hull has been limited. BUT, I have never seen another outboard SK on the water here in the East. There were so many manufacturers that a fair number must have been produced. I saw one on Craig's list about a year ago, but that's it. There wasn't a better ski boat in their time frame. I originally had a 125 on this boat. The 150 doesn't go any faster, but it has trim which is great. Too much weight though. Still a LOT of fun and I'm glad to have it back.
