Great meeting you also at Dora. It was fun showing the 3 engines we had there. Next year we hope to build an Aeroliner/Speedliner at the show. By the way I have a bunch of other engine in the restoration process. A KF-9, KG-9Q, Quincy 40 and 44, Brinkman 30-H mod, late 30-H, A quincy looper, Mark 50 fishing and after that I have lost track of the rest of the 4 cylinders. Still have to start about 25 two cylinders that include merc's, Champions, and Martins. Your right Roger, David and I are having way to much fun but were trying to preserve the old iron for all to enjoy. David also has a number of matching engines. Our parts fabrication is their to help all that are still running the old Merc's. One day we might even be building complete lower units, who knows. We will try to get to a couple more shows this year. If I'm still working in Indinapolis I will try to bring 4 engines to Mark Sutters for his meet. We are in the process of buying 5 Sids and a few more engines. Well there is no end in sight.

I am restoring an A looper, FA88 and have most of the parts to build a B looper. I need a B block and pistons if someone would like to sell them. I could also trade a new set of A pistons if that is desirable to make the deal. Here are the photos of the parts I have. Also have a Carter model N and fuel pump for it hats not shown. Attached is a photo of the parts. My Email is apvw1@aol.com.
Thanks, Alan |

That is an interesting crankshaft, a Mark 25 with a steel reedblock where the rollers run direct between the inner surface of the reedblock and right on the center of the crankshaft. I always wondered why they didn't go that steel reedblock route itself instead of bronze and then aluminum? I have a 4 banger Merc crankshaft that uses the same system so its supported in 2 extra spots not found on regular Merc 4s. How much extra bearing drag comes with the extra support is a good question. The Alky Deflector Quincy Merc padded block engine was run considerably. Other old racers claimed it sealed and isolated crankcase sides better than standard labrinth groved reedblocks or the smooth face oil hole pressurized versions. I wonder how many Quincy Flatheads ever used this sort of bearing system?

There is another Doug Kay engine that has been opened up to 44 inches. This one has been water tested and it is a great running engine. This one is very close to the red engine but dose not have the power dome cylinder heads. Hope you enjoy the photos.

What a work of mechanical art. Carl K. would be VERY proud of that restoration and the preservation of his companies history in doing so. Hats Off.

Doug Kay's work is absolutely breathtakingly spectacular. If my ship ever comes in, he's my man for restorations at this level.
Wow! 33-99 Paul A Christner

Hi Paul,
Thought you would like to see some photos of a 44 Doug Kay MOD engine. He is doing both my Quincy's, a 40 and a 44. This engine went to a guy in the north east. Alan |

Holly Moses!!! My throat choked! A person even getting a spot or smear of oil on it from running it would get an instant beating if there was no clean rag ready to wipe of any oil smear immediately!

My living room would be too dirty to put that engine on display...........It's nice to see another person take go-fast and combine it with art. (The most memorable other that this was spending a couple of days with Gene, Jim, and O. F. at 5th and State Street.) I hope it runs as well as the engines these icons were able to turn out. B-E-A-U-tiful...............
