Gday Ron. I do have at least 1 17P 1:1 prop. All my strangler gear was purchased by my father from Bert Hines many years ago. 1or 2 maybe have your name engraved. I will post some pics of the props,parts and motor soon. I was in contact with Pete Nydahl recently, he certainly has some nice gear.:)

In your "spares" you wouldn't happen to have some KC13R pistons would you?
I would be interested in buying some if you have them.

I have an original Evinrude version KC13R (which is the forerunner of the KR15M) matched numbers (#1082). All I need is the pistons and I can put it back together.

Lee thanks, but that # is the casting, the part number for the standard piston is 384806, the top ring is 316462 and the lower ring is 316463. The top ring is a pressure back ring that is about a 32nd thinner than the later pressure back. The lower ring is the same one that all the later 3.500 bore V4s used. Here is the page from the KC parts book.

Gday brichter. I have a set of kr pistons std p/n 385913 new. These are scalloped on the intake i think 1974 mod.Sorry but i dont have ring sets to suit p/n 385661. Ive damn misplaced my KC parts list, so i cant help much there at this time.Regards Peter.

I have some KC13R spare items that I am willing to part with for someone who needs them. I have an authentic block that is a true KC13R with serial plug and numbers intact.
I also have the correct early heads for KC13R motors with the deck height.

This motor used 5/8" wrist pin press fit pistons, same as a 58 50HP. Crap. They hammered out pin boss, the snap rings came out and pins dropped, troweled the sleeves, rings came off and hammered up the combustion chamber.... Ecch!:eek:

Were I to rebuild one, I'd just get some new 3/4" wrist pin pistons, using readily available adaptive full compliment bearings. Pro parts WP-15-1, $20 retail.

Mill out enough meat from the inside to match the weight, notch the skirt and enjoy!:cool:

Unique, was made from a 1972 style block which had a 16 roller crank, it was routed out to clear 18 roller rods. Most interesting porting, has a half moon out of the skirt on the intake side and mating bite out of the sleeve transfer passage to give a straighter intake path.:)

A lot more hand work here and there - -:eek:

Sure wish I'd hung onto my V4 racers, I had all 3! X-115, KC, KR. I think Bill Ziebarth has still got my KR.

This is the KR .. Super Strangler (Johnson cowling)...used for Offshore..must have gearcase with reverse..
We used the old X-115 gearcase and installed the shift handle on the midsection..
(same way as the X-115)..
Yes this was legal in Offshore 3..max 2 liter ..

Happy to oblige, since my KC13 just happens to be apart for rebuilding.

Sorry if not great quality, its hard to take good pictures of ports. Exhaust ports are square on the top, bypass is cut and the intakes are 13/16".
This motor is bone stock, UJ specs.
I included a shot of one of the pistons showing the scallops to match the block.

I just found the last piston I needed so this motor will be going together very soon.
Since it took two years to find all the correct pistons, it will probably be a "garage queen".

I have a spare KC block that I will probably build to run on my J class tunnel with some 135 pistons and '73 rods.

I stand corrected, the later pistons with 3/4" pins will NOT work in the KC motor :(
, the wrist pin was relocated, longer rod used.
KR has 3/4" pins already.

Right, the 1973 (p/n 385510) rods have the 16 roller bottom and the top sized for the 3/4" pin however the '73 pistons go too high and hit the head, the '74 and later pistons will hit at bottom dead center. You get into machine work, pistons and ports.....Both things have been done but its a pain.

Built this engine in the summer of '05 and installed it on a 1972? Marlin Sidwinder. As some of you might remember, I worked for OMC back in the late 60's and early 70's. Anyhow a stock 115 (96.2 cu/in engine) was rated around 106 HP at the prop shaft and would good for upper 40's on a high performance boat of its day (I am quite sure i'm going to take some flack on that statement). Attached some pictures of some of the changes I made, don't use these large ports with the later keystone ring !!!!! I also used the 140 HP intake manifold, reed block, reeds and stufferblocks. I tried 1 3/8" carbs, but never quit ran right, went back to 1 5/16 " carbs with adjustable idles. End results was 5700 - 5800 RPM with a stock 23" two blade (non cuped) brass prop. Thats, with a .1 % slip 58 MPH. Also built another one in the spring of '07, will go into detail later.

I started with a 1975 OMC 135 block and made the following changes. Reworked the porting as shown, did not change port timing. I then removed the cast water line that takes water from the block to the exhaust cover and welded up the hole in the exhaust cavity. I cleaned up the rod slots so that I could use the later rods and pistons with the larger wrist pins. The pistons I used are the low ring pistons (as you know I am not a big fan of the OMC Key stone ring). The piston skirt was notched like 115 piston in the above article. Used the '73 heads and ended up with an average compression of 136 PSI per cylinder. I then ran an outside water line (rubber hose) from the water inlet side of the block to the exhaust cooling cover. I again used the 140 inlet maifold , reeds, rubber stuffers and 1 3/8" carb. Again the large carb gave me problems and went back to the 1 5/16 carbs. End results on same 16' Side winder, 6200 rpm, 24" SS three blade cuped prop was 62.9 with .10 % slip. As you know, Side Winders tend to be nose heavy, gave the whole rigg to my son. He's going to put a six inch set back on and see if he can get the nose up.

Thanks for yor comments, my next project hopfuly this summer' will start with a 1978 merc 900. From what I hear not much can be done to an inline six, aaaaaah the challenge.:D

The 1971 Johnson High performance handbook. OMC was really promoting racing heavily at the time this came out. Notice the 'straight stacked" stinger on the cover shot.
There is a list of classes and engines that were used in a glossary at the back of the handbook........and a glossary of terminology.

The part they left out was how really dangerous these boats were in the day. I recall at Havasu it was nothing to have several drivers badly injured or even killed. :eek::eek: Such slaughter would make headlines today in, say, NASCAR.

Out in region 10 we called it the "Molinari limp" those of us that survived a blowover with only a badly broken leg or 2. Yeah, I was in that club. It was pretty tough the 1st couple times back in a boat after 6 weeks in the hospital and a year of recovery - - :mad:

And just plain bad boats, or bad luck.

It's no fun coming home from a race like this! Da boat, she bus' up! Transom broke at about 100MPH boat hooked and sideslide broke the sponson off. No injury (this time)
