Quincy Welding lost a good friend Friday.

Shelby Griffin raced D-Runabout in the late 50's, but is better known for his wildcat racing around Quincy. He had one of the fastest john boats in the area, and was a frequent winner of a timed race on a narrow, winding, log filled, small river in West Central Illinois.

This race was similar to the Sammamish Slough (spelling) race of years ago, except all contestants raced john boats with tiller handles

Shelby was a tool maker for Gardner Denver and often worked part time at Quincy Welding as a machinist.

Some of the oldtimers on this web site may well have run engines with pistons made by Shelby.

Shelby often attended alky races near Quincy and occassionally helped out in the pits.

He was an avid duck and goose hunter. Jim Schoch and Shelby hunted together a number of years before Shelby accepted a transfer out of state with Gardner Denver.

I enjoyed some quality hunting time with him as well.

Shelby was a no nonsense type of guy who will be missed by his friends and family.

Rest in Peace Shelby!
