Couple of questions on the SST 45 versus a fishing 60 motor setups

What is the purpose/advantage of having some of the water exiting through a larger diameter hose at the top of the water jacket (not sure of the technical term), versus the traditional pee hose of a fishing 60 motor.

How much of a performance gain are the SST45 carbs over the fishing carbs? My understanding is the SST45 carbs are in short supply and any 3 jets carb meeting the specs can be run in that class from what other engines do these carbs come from.

What kind of compression would a fresh sst45 have?

Just trying to make sure I get the most out of my 2 banger. Currently have a borrowed sst45 powerhead with my 60 fishing carbs.

Hello,

On a SST 45 SS racing motor from the factory, the cooling water is run backwards through motor compared to the fishing 60.... and there is no thermostat. Since a racing motor is run at wide open throttle most of the time, this cooling without a thermostat will keep the motor cooler.

Any carburator with the same diameter and venture sould be ok. Make sure it is jetted with the right jets.

What is the typical jetting, I know my carbs still have the factory 56's in them.

Boat performs really well, set up for EP style racing here in Ontario, so not running for pure topend. Run the prop shaft about 3" below the pad to aid in turning, the boat will run 54.5 gps on the lake with a 12 1/2 x 23, revs just over 7K with the 2.42 gears. On the race course have seen a top speed of 59.9 on the gps, seems to run better bouncing over the waves on the race course, I don't have the power to fly the boat when testing on the lake it seems, the rough water breaks it good and loose.

I'm running four inches of set back now and may try another 2 inches to see if that makes any difference. I've raised and lowered the motor but that doesn't seem to get me the speeds in testing that I've seen on the race course, now the 58-59's are just the recalled max speed I've recorded after the race and not a consisent running speed on course, but it does give me the indication that it will run.

I believe the current powerhead is tired as I only have around 125lbs of compression, but I could be wrong.

56's are the per book jet size....... you are good to go. Of course you can always tweek.

I also run lots of oil....... 20:1....... 1 quart of oil to 5 gallons.

And........... WEAR A HELMET....................

On a modified 45 powerhead we were running #63 mains after:

1- porting reed blocks & using carbon reeds w/o stops
2-addinig velocity stacks to carbies
3- mill head more than 45 specs
4-matching ports block w/sleeves
5-dry out and coat 45ss exhaust tuner

some of the other things can not mentionon a public forum but things above were considered fundamental to get a 45ss to go from 6,200 on the test wheel to turn 7,000 or an increase of about 8 hp = 70hp on 93 octane gas.

How long do fishing rods and crank last?
worth using or dont use over 6000?
Any Merc rod bolts for these?

We are running high 60's @ 7200 rpm with great acceleration.
same rpms with other props means we are up against pipe
Fixing to go to 1.87 gearcase with lowater pick-up and some other things.
Will test on sst60 test wheel.

That's flying for a 2 banger anthony, well done, will be interested to hear the results on gear case change.

Can you mod a fishing crank to be the same as the 45?
