a question for all the electronic wizards, a V6 flywheel has 12 magnets and yet the engine basically fires 3 times, and a 3 cylinder merc has 6 magnets under its flywheel and also fires 3 times. would the 6 magnets be acting as a retarder on engine rpm as apposed to the 12 magnets, so then if I was to replace the 6 large magnets with 12 small magnets would this free up the engine electronically and allow it to rev harder. thanks joe.

Are you talking 2 cycle in both cases?

A 6 cylindere 2 cycle engine will fire 6 times per revolution to be compatable with the 2 cycle operation. Thus there are 12 magnets total or 2 magnets per cylindere on the flywheel to create the low voltage in the 2 magnet loop as the flywheel passes the metal poles.

The same for a 3 cylindere 2 cycle engine, it fires 3 times per revolution.and requires 2 magnets per cylindere thus 6 magnets total.

If the 6 cylindere is a 4 cycle engine each cylindere will fire once evey other revolution thus 3 fires per revolution.

The number of magnets on the flywheel is necessary for each case.

The "outer" magnets on an OMC flywheel have no influence on how many times or when the engine fires. These magnets create the 'magneto" voltage that is stored in the power pack & then sent (when & How often) to the coils via zener diodes in the pack,, by the triggering signal from the sensors , created by the inner magnets located on the flywheel hub.

This is my best explanation of the 'MAG CD" ignition. Been 30 years since OMC school.
