just a quick question;

Does the 45ss lower unit fit any other HP Evninrude motors?

Are there any small hp (15-35) racing motors?

I'm a newbie to a lot of this stuff, and I'm just curious.

Thanks
Wayne

No it fits only the 45SS

There are many other racing lower units made for 6 to 60 hp made in the past and a few in current production. Most are scarce and in high demand

So, what lower racing units are currently made? Just for the big stuff?

Guess it's just too much of a 'niche market below the 45ss,... interesting, would be great to see some increased involvement from one of the big OB manufacturers(?) To target the smaller racing series(?)

The smallest is the Sidewinder/APBA former OMC 15SS unit.

Next is the small Komato unit made by Jim McKean, then Jim's larger Kamato. These are derived from the Yamato Hatchet used on motors from about 10 cubic inches (125cc) to 45 cubic inches (700cc).

Pavel Koncy (Konny) and GRM (Rossi) make racing motors the same sizes with their own racing lower units.

The only manufacturer interested in making smaller motors equipped with a racing lower unit is Selva in Italy. The big guys are probably done forever ... but that just opens the door for someone else ... it always has in the past.

I'd say watch for something from China in the coming decade.

Thanks for the information; we'll see what happens in the next few years;

I'd love to see a gear case that fit 35hp and under JohnnyRudes,

Or something for a new E-Tec or something....

Anyway, time will tell, thanks again for the info

I don't think there will ever be lower units like that again. You will always have to hand machine adapters to cross fit from other small makers and hot rod shops.

Bass?

Yes, Sid Bass makes a racing lower unit on order, but I do not think he has them on a ready to ship basis. He's one of the "hot rod shops"

Same as the others, they have to have custom adapter plates made.

I believe the 45SS gearcase has the same bolt pattern as the generic 56 cube towers. With a stub driveshaft, a coupler, a cut down stock driveshaft and a modified water tube would be required to adapt it.

yes there are several omc 15 to 25 hp racing engines and you can buy them straight from OMC the (15hp) and can even get a racing lower unit upgrade and come race stock outboard in 1 of the largest classes in stock outboard

Another option for you, Wayne is to go to www.hydroracer.net and look in the mod,stock,pro for sale area, as there lots of units being sold there all the time and they can be adapted for what you need or want, also there is plenty of info regarding people that will help you or even send you to the right man to assist in the transition ,

one thing you need to be careful of is, Do you need a unit that will pump water or is your application of the nature that you can use a force fed water set up.. many of the after market unit we racers are using now is a force fed water set up ,if your running a 3 or 4 cylinder engine you have to be running about 40 just to force water to the upper cylinder if it takes too long for you to get to that speed you may need to opt for a unit that has a built in water pump to be sure your engine is cooling properly in all critical areas !!

hope this helps
regards to all

I am not aware of these motors. Can you tell us the model number, price and how to order them?

I think you are referring to the out of production 15SS and 45SS which he already knows about, but can't buy "straight from OMC" or any other place except hunting down a used one.

hi,
other than the forced water pump wouild a streamlined gearcase only be of the non-shiftable type?
I've been thinking of a smaller gearcase/shiftable 15 inch unit for my '77 JonaRude 50hp fishin' mota.

thanks

The easiest thing is to buy a motor, There's plenty of choices in new & used equip. Need to ask yer-self what you're really looking for in size, what kind of boat intended. A race lower wont do much if any good on most conventional boats. Hydro's, flat bottom runabouts & tunnel hulls are where they do well. Hulls that are heavy & displace alot of water tend to need the geared down units & larger diameter props. Some performance V bottoms respond well too but beyond that you'd be better off working with props, weight & set up on a conventional boat. That said, there's a long list of racing motors, almost always something for sale. You are of course encouraged to come racing, lots of fun.
If you want to go the play boat route & adapt a case, your best bet is a used one. Id think with the Komato's being available & reported to be good some older units may start showing up on the HR for sale or here or even e-buy. The Bass is great but a bit big for anything under 25hp. Yamato pro cases adapt well with the 4 stud pattern.

Those do have a HUGE gear case, The smaller OMC cases would probably blow out the sides in less than10 minutes LoLs There, a 45 case would be cool.
