if tower has much taper in its length when you take out 3 or4 inches it dose not fit back to gether very good hear is a 15 horse evinrude we did cut it into with a band saw put it in a milling machine made both side flat and true then sent to welder cost a bout 250.00

On shafts that have a smaller mid section than splined end, like my Johnson, what is the best way to shorten the shaft? Welding? Pinning? Squaring and adding a coupler? Something else?

We have cut one end square, and the other five sided, then we get a socket wrench that fits the square, and the five sided on the other. Like a half inch SNAP ON socket...

Socket size depends on the shaft sizes, of course.

We have cut one end square, and the other five sided, ..

I think you meant to say; ' square on one end, six side on the other',
so a 1/2" drive/six point 1/2" socket would fit.
I wonder if the black impact sockets would be better for this,
than the shiny chrome ones???

I'm an "IDEA" man.....Thanks, Brian, for correcting me....six sides , five sides....There is a difference, but we don't use the 12 point socket, only the six, seems stronger.

Bill Curtis uses a craftsman deep socket and cuts the square end off Makes both ends six sided

Great. Thanks. :) Sorry but that leads me to another question. Since the thin section of the shaft is .500" and the larger sections are .625" would I want to cut at the lower transition (arrow in pic) and make the four sided end on the .500" and the six sided end on the .625"? With a six sided deep socket I guess I would have to stick to the .500" section just above the lower transition? I know Craftsman also makes 1/2 in drive sockets for 1/2 in (and larger) square nuts. . .

I will be shortening the shaft approx. 5 inches. Thanks again for the info. Dave

Cut the square on the small shaft, and the hex on the larger. You'll probably breck the small shaft anyway....

If you can machine the larger shaft down to the smaller, at least part of it, you will be less likely to snap the small shaft.

OH...Forget the above...I thought you had two sizes of shafts. Cut the shaft in the middle of the smalles part, at least that is what I'd do..

I drill the larger shaft to about half its size and machine the smaller shaft for a slight press interference fit ... drive them together to test fit and then weld after length is confirmed.

If you make a real good estimate and cut the smaller shaft on a 45° angle at the size step, you have a nice 45° to fill in when welding. It will be very strong and very straight

Maybe I'm out in left field here but why not just have it resplined??? Instead of cutting up a bunch of sockets and all... Have the guy who does the SS to just respline the shaft.

Russ

RussThe most sensible thing. With BRF to look on for someone to do it & all its the best way if your using a gear case that's made for a splined shaft or the origional case. You would need to do that & do whatever is needed for the water pump to be driven.

when you shorten the shaft it is no longer the same size look at the pictures

Maybe going off course here but in trying to be helpful, on Monster Nines question It depends on how much you want to cut off, if alot then sleeving the center area would be best. Your machined ends would then still be good. I've cut the lower part of similar OMC shafts to couple to stubbed units but that is for a gear case adapt not just shortening. If your cutting a little, whatever sticks up above the water pump is the limit on cutting the lower thick end & re-machining. Good Luck
On the origional question the best advise Ive got is to get a low cost parts or basket case lower & start from there while keeping your good one operational.

Now why would he want to do that? I have only built three short 90 yammis, all still runnuing and doing fine. Apparently "They" got to him, I'm the ENEMY. I even went as far as to BEG him not to cut the transom on the tunnel. But hell what do I know......

Apparently I missed something else. I had mine cut because I wanted a 15in midsection and a custom trim system for my XR Allison.

I got both and I am very pleased. As far as the shaft... The gentleman who built mine cut my driveshaft down, welded it back up and re-cut the splines. It is the same as the 90 horse stuff if I am not mistaken, it has a smaller diameter just above the water pump housing and it widens out again at the top. It gives the shaft the ability to twist a bit. I can only assume that was done to minimize breakage.

88's stuff runs well. I have seen & heard too much about that not to believe it. As far as whether or not to cut one down... It's a pain. But if done right, the cool factor goes up considerably!

Our machinist can cut off and spline a V-6 drive shaft without taking the gear case apart.

The problem is, no everyone has a machine to spline a shaft. You can cut a drive shaft with a sawsall, and file a square on it and you can file a hex....My experience with welded shafts, they always seem to break right at the weld...

I tried to get in touch with you several times but you never called. As far as enemys I wouldn't say that. I've only met you once I didn't have a problem with you.Hell I'm just waiting for an invite to come ride the river in Piere Part. Maybe you can teach me how to drive that ally. And you were right about the transom but it was already done before you told me any different. PS you find a block for me?

The drive shaft is $80.00 I'll tell you where to send it, he does them every week and they are perfect and hold up. And you can not tell where he did the work. I have a block but no crank. Or head. Might find a complete and you can start there. The short mid, I haven't looked for a while but they are still out there. Or the cut one will work also. If you cut a stock 90 it is acually better because it allows more room for the 90 water pump. With the factory short mid you will be trying to stuff a 90 pump where a 48/55/60 pump was intended to be. I have two people who can do the cutting and welding for you also, I have been strapped for time lately. Call me tomorrow.

jason's, right about that,i got a short one,it takes a lot of trimming to make the 90 pump work. next time i'll cut a long shaft

Don't know if it helps !! but the old 2 cyl 60 yam short shaft fits straight on Yam 90 powerhead. (90 yam was 2 cyl 60 with extra cylinder added )
Some people are still running this combination over here !. I will try to dig out photo
Advantage is you can use the smaller generation box, so keep prop dia and pitch down !!

seems like the mariner small gearcase wont hold up under the drag racing we do. we all are running stock powerheads, quess i might be speaking for my self. the 90 lower unit never seems to give a problem...........
