I won this power head [long block] in a British auction. It is 50 hp, 3 cylinders ,but, it is not 43 cubic inches like the normal 40 and 50 horsepower Yamahas we see over here. It has a serial number 100189 on the block. It looks a lot like a 70 6H3 or 6H1 block. The papers I got with it say it had a 14:24 gear case, a 11 3/8 x 12 pitch prop, 4500 to 5500 rpm operating range and a compression of 6.30. The documents look totally Yamaha. I am at a loss with the 62F code. It doesn't match the normal Yamaha outboard codes. They go "number”,” letter", "number" [example 6H3] This motor is 62F! Anyone know what I have here?
thanks
Don

So far I have found out the motor is a 1993 model 50 hp. Called a 50G. It came in two versions. A short shaft and a long shaft. I would appreciate seeing a picture of one. The model was not sold in North America. I think it must have a lower unit same as the 2 cylinder 55 hp motor.

Yes, in Europe the 850cc block was used on the 50G (62F), 60F(6H2) & 70B(6H3).

Thanks French Phil, I have a parts book coming from Britain, so I will able to check. I did get an email as well. The sender says serial number I have is from a short shaft model ?

Both short & long were available. What boat will you pair with the 50 ?

French Phil, I may have really lucked out with this power head. We race T Class in this area. Our rules are a little different which gives me an interesting option. We normally race
a 70 CES yamaha on a Critchfield in T850 class. To help the T750 class grow , we planned to run a 50D Tohatsu on a different boat. Now if this 50G Yamaha power head fits on the 70 CES mid, then I only need to change the powerhead on the T850 boat. Our Fair Competition Rule will allow this 50 hp in the T750 class eventhough it is a larger cubic inch. The T850 boat is over 150 lbs heavier than a normal T750, so it may not be competitive. But it is worth a try. Plus it gives us an additional boat a new T750 racer can try. Plan B would be to sell the motor to a Thunder Cat racer up here.

Definitely a good find. Here's a link to the tech manual:

It's in French but as a Canuck you should do Ok.

Thanks Phil, French isn't one of my stronger suits, this will be a good reference.

Who knows, a bunch of the tboat racers were banned from the site so who knows what the administrator of the site is up to. You can find the tboat guys at www.hpbcanada.com

Hopefully it's just lost in the shuffle for now, hounddog had posted lots of good stuff there.
