View Full Version : sst60 mid section question?

I'm wanting to go with a 56 motor instead of the 49. My question is this the adapter plate and tuner slides down into i guess what is called a exhaust housing extension which then slides down into the short mid. The sst60 doesn't have this adapter plate and tuner that slides into the short mid.

I'd like to know does the short mid on the sst60 does it have some kinda heat shield welded in there so you don't burn up the water pump with the exhaust?? I assume this long box that the tuner goes inside is to keep fire off the water pump correct?

Does someone have a picture of a close up of the sst60 mid or where they might have a heat shield?

How long is the tuner on a sst60 I have been told I will have to cut one down down from a long shaft to fit?

Thanks
Chris

its just like a stock 49 short shaft but without the inner exhaust housing so yes the exhaust blows onto the pump

The hole's above the cav. plate mite also help relive some heat

The tuner specs. is 2 3/8" x 2 3/8" inside, 1 1/2"x 1 3/4" up top and 7.69" long.
I got the info. a month or so ago and kept it for a future project, hope this helps.

Thanks, you got a close up picture of one? How thick of material?

The 7.69 includes the exhaust plate.

You can get the sst60 specs from the opc race site.

The water going through the mid section from the power head plus the actual water going through the water pump will keep it cool enough. I've never had a problem or seen it with the other guys I race with.

Here is the one I built for mine. Built to the sst60 spec.

How thick of aluminum is the tuner both the base plate and the tube itself? and where or who makes the solid mount?

There are solid upper an lower mount's on Ebay now for sale.

Look under evinrude racing.

Thats where i got mine He did a beautiful job on them. You do however have to add a center hole for the 56 in adapter.

I seen some there but it was for a 49 ci motor and didn't know if they would work for the 56 adapter plate?

Sorry I just seen your post ultra30 I'll have to look into these mounts

Is there that much benefit over stock, I don't run them or most of the guys racng up here don't run them and handling is not an issue with string steering.

Thats what I wonder is it even worth the money

String steering is holding the powerhead solidly in place by the arms they are bolted directly to the midsection.with the tiller and conventional steering torque is transmitted thru the upper motor mount.

did you buy both the upper and lower mounts from the guy on ebay or just the upper?

the 20"exhaust addapter is taller than the 15" addapter, the drive shaft and the shift shaft will not reach.

Can I mill it down?

none of the aluminium parts are uniform in section so you cant mill the exhaust housing or either inside housings.
You can cut and shut the drive shaft and cut and re thread the shift shaft and cut the water tube though.
Seaway has all the parts you need

This has never been an issue for my 56 on 49 15" mid with a 56 long shaft adapter plate. Lots of racers up here with the same set up and never heard anyone having an issue.

I've never compared the thickness of the adapter plates what's the difference.

Cheers,

you can do as you wish, the fact still remains, the 15" stock exhaust adapter is about a 1/2" shorter then the 20" addapter, seems like alot of drive shaft spline to be givin away on a corse spline....., you can mill it down, the older ones are less work:cool:

Yup, I measured the two plates tonight, the difference by my measurements was 5/16th.

I'll get a sst60 adapter plate measured later to see how it compares to the two others.

The 49" plate measures 1.75" the 56 inch plate measures 2.075" you are giving up .325". This still leaves .800" of engagement and the o ring is still inside the crank!! Is it the right thing to do? I have run 3.0 and 3.3 drag motors with .750 engagement putting out a hell of a lot more horsepower. I don't see a problem. As far as milling the plate , Yes you can mill the top. As far as seaway, they are looking at about 800.00 when and if he gets them. Those of us on some kind of a budget will still strive to have fun.

Seaway have them and they are less than that.
I just bought one ( ate a bit of budget)
