View Full Version : My Speeditwin Cottage Racer Project

Evening gents, new here but AOMCI member. First time with a racing motor.

I am restoring a Speeditwin Cottage Racer. Vacturi carb, carb adaptor, WISECO stacks, Elto gearcase, elevated tank, etc...

Run into a few issues so far, one of the jugs being a big problem. Bad crack in it. Gearcase looks like it may be difficult as well.

Not sure what way I am going to go cosmetically either.

Any advice on how to make the fancy head catchers I have seen pics of on here?

Any other advice would be great.

Lots of work to do on this one.:D

Fortunately there is a reasonable supply of Speeditwin parts around. Racing parts of your motor are intact. The cracked cylinder could be brazed back and honed, or just get another and port it. I sold most of a 6039 awhile back for 25 bucks. Clean up the pistons and Moly coat the skirts, they will work fine. Scuffs can be smoothed with a mill file 1st.

The gearcase is stock unit used on service 22HP Speedis, 33 Speedifour and Big four pre WWII. Do you have the innards? The skeg can be easily added back.

It is worthwhile when done. My C service was salvaged from hurricane IVAN - the powerhead was jammed between the back wall of the shop (which came loose from the floor) and the slab, in the mud. I had to raise the wall with a 20 ton jack to free it and walk the wall back!

Thank you for the encouragement! I was worried about that crack in the cylinder, brazing it in beyond my ability, Ill have to farm that out. Will look for someone in my area. Thanks.

I do have alot of innards for the gearcase, different styles and props. I forgot to post the pics. Here they are.

I also have an ad up on the webvertize at aomci.org for a good jug, but no hits yet. Hopefully.

I am looking for a ( if looking at the carb) left cylinder and piston with rings and rod... I know it's a long shot but someone might have a parts motor... Could also use a vacturi if there is one laying around.
