By request I am going to skip over 1973 for now and start posting 1974 pictures, this will take awhile as I have quite a few from this year and haven't scanned them all yet.

During its five year run this event was not lucky with the weather. Two events were scheduled for 1974. Without doing further research I'm not even sure if the June event happened or was cancelled due to wind. The September event only ran one of the two scheduled days. A record was set by Tim Briggs.

My Dad was 3rd in UI behind Art Kennedy (pictured with Lou Eppel in the third picture in the previous post) and Clarence Archer. Terry Leatherby probably would have run second or third but he blew his powerhead during the race. My Dad and he rebuilt it in the hotel room to get him back out there for Sunday but the rest of the event was cancelled. This was a 1 hour marathon so the drivers and equipment were all pretty beat up afterwards.

Great shots! Please keep them coming!

I like the one of the beach start, Dad is in that one (328), I also see the Rockford bunch in the same pic: Terry Leatherby (898), Duane Timm (245), and far left is Dick Ingebretsen (185).

Auglaize, Again, Just awesome and again thanks! hope you will PLEASE post more.
In the latest series, A great boat racer and great person, Art Kennedy (147) in his unusual looking hull which I was led to believe was a Molinari. He was hard to beat in UI class in which the approved engines were the 90 in^3 BP1000 Mercs; X115 and GT115 OMCs. This year (1974) was the last year for UI class and Art won UI in this race. Obviously they combined this heat with UIs and UJs running together as Timm (Nauss Hull #245) and Ingebretsen (Sidson #185) have OMC stinger KC13rs and the red Kitson with #231 on it has a Twister 1.
Also a great shot of Terry Leatherby in his Nauss hull (#898) and GT115. He is running the 1:1 gearcase as it was a long course, but very rough water so I wonder if that was a good choice. Either way, he didn't finish as he lost a power head during the race.
I am wondering about Clarence Archer whom in the standings listing took second in UI. I know he hailed from Washington DC and think he ran a BP but I don't know a number or anything.
Do you have any pictures of Clarence or any boats with a red stripe Mercury that would have run in this heat?
Also curious as to who is the driver of #231 if anyone reading this knows?
Again, Thanks and keep them coming!

I think you may have a one of a kind photo of a one of a kind engine. No. 191 is Jimbo and looks like a Goat Boat. Look at the cowling on that Super Strangler! They were experimenting with aero tapering (streamlining) the engine cowl Never seen that one before. Great pics!

This last series looks like the Sport J's. In the last picture the blue boat #128 is Howard Pipkorn in a Hydrostream Puma. That is a great shot! I love it! Also another great picture of Jimbo with the crazy streamlined hood.
Something else going on with that midsection. I see he was not shown in the standings as having placed......not like Jimbo. I wonder if he had mechanical issues with the heavily prototyped motor?
Kitson hulls were well represented at this race (i.e. 964, 431, 476, 1074, and 825 to mention a few). I hope you will post some more of the UI and UJ's. Thanks again!

I see dad there in the middle, near Art, Terry, Jimbo, Dick I, Howard P, Harold S, Duane T, Etc. I like the one with the OMC guys pulling Art Kennedy's gearcase. Also nice picture of Mike Butler's Sid.
Very Nice. Thank you and keep posting!

#44 - Red pickle-fork Molinari is Canadian Oley Berkis
#82 - Should be Lee Sutter
#501 - Should be Bert Serra but I think Bert is driving #581 (Hubercraft ?)

Correction #2 oh wise one....
Bert was driving the white Molinari withe red and blue stripes #501
The 581 boat was probably Duane Bergauer, Dennis was driving the 138 boat.
Both did belong to Bert, but the Bergauer brothers talked him out of them. 581 is a picklefork, the 138 is a full nose
Both are Molinari's
The Hubercoti was badly damaged during testing, was repaired, then sold.

Jeff, thanks for the more accurate information.
Pretty sure #1000 is Rich Luhrs in a Milesmaster.
#1033 looks like a beautiful Sid Son.
Wasn't #1103 usually one of the Florida guys; Chick Gagen, Homer Greene or one of the Zonkercraft guys?
Bert Serra sure got around because he showed up a few times here in Canada during 1974.

Actually changing the gear case was Jim Stockle's boat, friend of Art. The Briggs brothers were driving # 3 (Tim) & 7 (Geoff).

Do you have the results of the race ?

Yes it was a Molinari. Jim Briggs saw it at Molinari’s one year when we were at Cook prior to the Paris race. It actually had a wide cockpit for 2. Ted May rigged it with an 89 cube & won the 1972 marathons nationals with it in Miami. BTW I won S & Geoff Briggs won U the same day

Yup that's Mr. Luhrs ( he is my senior, show respect hahaha ) in the #1000 Milesmaster.
#1033 Was Mike Butler's Sidson, nice boat, for a great guy.
#1103 was Jock Horner's Molinari, Chick Gagen was there with the #22 Molinari, #308 was a Zonkercraft running UJ
Bert did like to race in Canada when ever he could....really enjoyed himself there, as did I.

Buler’s SidSon is the same boat in earlier pictures that carried #289 which was me & was the first Sid-Son. Mike bought it from Jim Briggs. He “blew it over” the first time out.

My dad had a Sid as well, a real Tank. It had the name "After you II" painted on the deck when he got it from Dick Ingebretsen, #185 in a pic earlier in this thread. Dick took second in UJ at St. Marys 1974. Here is a pic of Dad in 1975 that Mark Nelson took. 67180

Didn't you drive the same SE Pinel that John Sherlock also drove...very fast SE boat with a Merc 650XS?
Bert Serra helped Mark Rotharmel in 1974 with a Merc powered U-class Molinari.

Yes sir...'75 there were 2 SE Pinel's #6 was mine, #7 was Fred Finchum first, then John Sherlock took over. '76 was a redesigned new boat, yellow, #7 and yes it was very fast. John also took over the drive in this boat when I stopped driving. John went on to set a straightaway record at Wellen with this boat. Mark's Molinari was the same boat that won the single engine class at Havasu in '71, with Bob Hering driving.

Thanks for remembering!

Auglaize99,

This is a great thread!

I noticed that you have several pics with my boat in it - its the red #63 tunnel hull.

I wasn't the driver back then, but I now own the boat and I'm slowly restoring it.

Do you have any additional photographs of this boat (in the pits or on a trailer or whatever)...??

I have enjoyed all of the history - and I love the early style tunnel boats.

Keep the history coming!

Thanks
