Omc 35 Gearcase trouble

I have a 1980 Johnson 35 hp with thru hub gearcase and it does not ship. Seems linkage to clutch dog is disconnected or broken. What tool do I need to remove carrier to inspect everything to determine what is wrong. Only one I found was 220$. I would like to buy a used/ homemade one. Thanks for any insight.

remove it and pull on the shift shaft, does it still move with detents or is it lose?
Are you sure nobody pulled the cradle pivot screw out thinking it was the drain screw and then put it back in but the cradle moved out of the way?
