I recently received a collection of Steve Litzell's paper collection via Mike Thirlby. Included in his paper was 30 or 40 editions of this newsletter , The Propeller from the Southeastern Boating Association. Since I have been posting the west coast newsletter stuff I thought it only fair that you east coast guys a place to go as well. So here we go July 1957 edition. I will post them in the best order I can. Enjoy. July 1957 Volume VI No.11

I'm with Steve, Dale. You are doing exactly what boatracingfacts is all about. I been wondering though about that dam. One guy sliced off part of the wooden dam and brought it back to the pits, and two others hit it, but were not hurt. Kind of scary to think about such a race course.

SEBA was the only association I knew about when I started in 1953. I Had joined the Atlanta Boat Club, which was required to race in SEBA and had bought a KG7 and Speedliner from another member. SEBA had races every weekend from May through September, and no more than three hundred miles from Atlanta. I first met Dieter in 1956 when he came over to promote his engines and was testing at the Atlanta Boat Club site on Lake Allatoona. He was staying with Scott Smith in Dallas, Ga. Scott and Al Bryant had joined the club to get the engines approved by SEBA and later NOA and APBA. This 1957 SEBA Propeller I remember well because at the Scottsboro championship, Dieter had loaned me a propeller and set up my three cylinder Koenig for the straight away time trials, which I set a record of 73 mph. The Scottsboro club after the races on Saturday had a Bar BQ in the pits and Dieter, Scott, Al and me had all gone through the line and sat down together to eat, when Dieter after taking a bite, got up, without saying anything, went down to the lake and washed the sauce off of the meat, it was too spicy for him. SEBA finally folded in the mid sixties and NOA took over in the southeast, and we would go to the APBA championships and races in Florida.

Thank you very much for what you do,putting this history up Dale.looks like dad was getting it done, not long after he started.we used to go have supper with the Lastingers and dad worked for Mr. Nettles.probaly built his motors.Nettles had a outboard, small engine repair and was also a mechanical contractor. After dad helped the hvac techs out some and he found out what they made,he told Nettles he wanted to move into hvac service and go to apprenticeship school.Mr. Nettles wanted to keep him, cause he was making money in motor repair, dad said, well i will go work for your competition.so my father became a hvac service tech and the small engine repair part of Nettles went away.

The reason I am able to post the boat racing history that I do is because guys have saved it. This collection of SEBA Propellers came from the collection of Steve Litzell. Thanks to Connie for getting this stuff to Mike Thirlby who in turn passed it on to me. As long as I contiue to receive new old stuff I will continue post it for all to enjoy. Also thanks to Ron Hill for keeping this website going and giving us a platform to share the history of boat racing.

Thank you as always Dale.Never knew dad raced runabouts till you started posting these. And then thought dad meant Edwin Smith at races around Charleston.Mother said nope, dad raced runabouts and hydros, then just hydros and Edwin raced and dad helped him out.they were lifelong friends and Edwin Smith built several 24 of Daytona winning porsches .And apparently someone did not like the way Harold Bateman did some motor work for them(butcher bateman),cause he beat them.

George

Never knew that, how tragic to loose your Dad at such a young age and at a race meet that you were both competing.
Hope to see you at up coming AOMCI meets.
Peace to you

Hi Pete,

Thanks for your comments. My dad loved boat racing. It was his release on the weekends to be just "doc", as everyone in racing called him. He would have wanted me to continue racing. And I did.
My dad was a eye specialist MD that was involved with the development of Cataract Surgery. His funeral was attended by more people that the funeral home could seat. And lots of them
were people the he had saved their vision because of his surgery skills in a new era of eye surgery. I am very proud of my father. He treated people that couldn't afford the surgery also, to go along with his many patients.

See you at our AOMCI meets next year.

It was very interesting Dale. Lots of old history. I knew a lot of the drivers in the various issues and I liked reading about all their earlier races. From clues, this last issue was in early 1959. And the issue was published before Mardi Gras. The high point drivers for 1958 were listed and it contains race dates in May, June and July---so probably January or February or maybe March 1959. (When is Mardi Gras?)

Thanks, Wayne. One of the names that appear in a lot of these newsletters is Ralph Donald. While going through the old negatives the DePue Men's Club has I came across this picture from 1994. Perhaps Ralph will see this and add his comments on it. A few guys commented that the boat is a DeSilva sit down hydro and raced in 350cch.

Thank you putting this up Dale. And Thank You for all the history you take the time to post.Obviously, dad come back from the injury and stuck to B and C.early '60's were when he started getting hurt. And by '66,with 3 kids, his MiL had the come to jesus talk with him.And grandma, loved her some boat racing!he did sneak into a couple of OpC boats, helping with set up and Mr.Bateman tried to get him run a OPC boat, but he said he stopped and did.

Hi Dale,
I have really enjoyed your posting of all the SEBA monthly mailings you ran across in recent times. Thanks so much.
My dad was listed in the c hydro list of the top four of this issue. Finished second. Dub Parker won the race. I also raced in SEBA with my dad. I raced SEBA most of 1957. I first raced with SEBA starting
in '54 until I ended up getting a Konig ride from Walt Blankenstein. That took me more often to APBA and NOA racing.
I sure recognize most all the names of the SEBA guys during those years.
My dad died in a boat racing accident at Daytona International Speedway, in Lake Lloyd in June of '59. The July issue of The Propeller mentioned his passing.
Due to my mother, that ended my boat racing for the most part, from his accident.

I moved on to Motorcycle Road racing in the sixties and didn't retire completely until 2009.
Regards to all: George

That is my boat. When the Pro Category decided to allow only capsule hydros over a transition period, I knew that David Westbrook was building capsules and had him build me one. When it was finished I took it to Desilva and they built the hydro around it. I then bought a 500 engine from Scot Smith. When the boat was finished, David and I rigged it in my basement. I don't remember when we first ran it, but I do remember that using foot throttle and stack puller was very confusing. So David made a hand throttle attached to the steering wheel and that worked fine. I ran the boat three or four years, never did feel comfortable in it. I never could feel what the boat was going to do. I did run it in the UIM WC in Lakeland in 1993, and DePue a couple of years. It became too much trouble with the other classes that Steve and I were running at the time. later, I gave it to Bill Kurps, but I don't know what he did with it.
