There was a time, when you could go and buy several outboard motors, built your own boat or buy a DeSilva, Champion or Speedliner and go race.

Southern California had Hanen Dam, Puddingstone Reservoir, Carlsbad Lagoon, The Puddle, Long Beach Marine Stadium, an Diego Flood Control Channel, Hart Part in Bakersfield, Mission Bay in San Diego, Blythe, Yuma and Needles on the Colorado River and Lake Mead in Boulder City to race on. Lake Weist, Brawley came in 1956 and we can still race there if we had any boats.

Now only mission Bay allows us to race with the H1 Hydros and it is always too rough to race, so no one goes.

In the 1950's all motors being raced could be bought with little or no trouble.

Great pictures. I watched some of those races with my dad at Marine Stadium when we lived in Long Beach.

Yea, back in the good ole’ days. Those days are long gone. It is the same for Region 10 in the Pacific Northwest. Most likely the same all over the country. We should have invested in Marine Stadiums all over the country of various sizes. The NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) bought or constructed drag racing sites back when there was not as much government intervention. How did we survive!!!
