The design is a Mirage Tom Cat II by Brad Collins. John bought the original molds from Mike Mullins (current "Mirage Boats" President) and then did some tweaking on the original design (often with the help of Brad Collins, who had moved to Indiana to work for Rinker Boats).

So that means, TWO great designers played a part in those hulls!

Just some history for ya!

With sport C, i mean ,it's a sit down beginners class, some on here have been asking how it happens.

All i can say is Is there some thing wrong with going 60MPH with a 40hp.?

It was once the hottest class in all of mini-boat racing. Not sure why it went away like it did.

Val, reason i asked is i know they have a bad rep.turn over spin a lot
etc.but as for cost these are ideal for a young old person.

2 reasons they have seats, j,ski prices are going out the roof.

I can't see much similarity between the original Tom Cat and this boat.
I am anxious to try it.
Do you know of anyone who has one or has tried one and can report on
the performance?
Our class in Region 11 is growing. We have 12 Sport C members. I think a class can be killed if you have one person that can't be beat and then the
rest get dixcouraged and quit. But we have so much fun amongst ourselves
that we just keep growing. Our final race at Minden we had 9 boats on the
water and two on the beach. We have a couple of "Play Days" each year
and invite prospective drivers to take a ride and possibly start racing.

Way to go Sport C!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure looks like a great way to get into racing. It's all about having fun! The fun days take the pressure off too...great way to get new people in!

When you are starting out, it is not about how fast you are going, but how close and fun the racing is. There's always faster classes to move up to.

Tom Cat II was not the original Tom Cat. TCII was a completely different boatn - and those boats are from that mold. The Worthy's and Saffolds ran a couple before they moved up in class. I have a picture of them here somewhere..

We had one. I ran it as an sst45 then my brother ran it as a sport c. We sold it and it was changed back to a 45 then destroyed in an accident. A great boat imo. I'll see if i can find some pictures.

I had an original tomcat as well (with the s bottom). Val will remember it was a very fast boat. I loved it. It still runs around here.

Cool!! I loved my original Tom Cat as well.

The first year the original boats came out, it was at the height of Sport C -- Brad took his new design (a boat he built himself) and won 12 of 13 races he entered, plus won Havasu and the Nationals. He was the National high point champ too --- but yet didn't make it into the Hall of Champs that year. :( Very sad deal.

I'm still looking for better pictures of the Tom Cat II boats.

Here's a picture of JR Saffold in his Sport C Tom Cat II - he did really well with his also...(non capsule)

Was his new boat the Tom Cat 2?

No, that was back in 1987 with the TCI. The new TCII was designed around 1991-92.

What happened to the boat that was under construction at your place?

Any new pictures?

You mean the little pleasure boat? Unfortunately, that boat hasn't left the storage unit for 3 years. New job responsibilities (travel travel travel) has put that project on hold indefinately. My youngest son is pretty sad about that too, since he helped in the creating of that design.

It's funny -- even though all that they have completed so far are the frames and some combing, my son still asks me what size motor I feel would be best (he knows mom will choose a SANE choice of power...lol).

Here are some pics of my Rinker Sport C.

Bottom obviously has been repainted, deck is getting stripped down for sanding and prepping for paint. The boat has been completely repainted as of now.

Basically, changed the yellow to red and repainted/maintained the white as white. I will have to go out and take some pics in the shop.

This was John's personal boat and it is currently for sale.

This one is ready to test. Don't ask me about colors. John said he had some
paint laying around that he had to use up.
