I was wondering what you use for a reducer, a baseball bat real cool Fast, real cool. An sst60 tuner measures 2 3/8" x 2 3/8" at one end and 1 1/2" x 1 3/4" at the base plate, now if I did my math correctly that works out to a 2" x 3" pipe reducer, thinking I'll be using that on my next winter project and I probably can get that in aluminum and in stainless, curious though, what would you do on a 20" mid?

A tuner being longer then what the sst 60 specs call for do you really loose that much top end?

Oh and would you loose the can?
the hotter the exhaust the faster it travels......
in both directions, now you know what to do.
In the sst45 class they check the size of the hole that cools the tuner as they know its an area where you gain

it's a 19s, makes 95-100hp @ 7800-8000rpms. i'd go one more inch of pitch on the prop, to get her down to just under 8000rpms, looks stock for the most part. don't see were the main water outlet is.

Hi 75luva
Have you had a chance to test drive the boat? That boat was originally designed in Sweeden as an Osca and one was brought into Australia and a mould made and others were manufactured in Australia as Wing boats in the mid 70's to mid 80's. John Toyer was the guy that was building. These raced in the 45 ci class and were fitted with 50 hp Mercury and Suzuki. No one has ever raced one like yours with the FT 19s . If your motor is an FT 19s this motor is capable of obtaining speeds in excess of 80 mph with the right set up. I noticed from the rego label on your trailer that your are in Victoria Australia. You may wish to discuss the boat with others who have raced these types of hulls as from what I have been told you may have a wild ride as not much trim is required and whatch the corners. You may wish to ask about re this boat on the Victorian Outboard Club (VOC) to get driving tips. Just post a topic FT19s on a wing boat. I use to race an FT 19s in the late 70's early 80's on my boat called Steves Jem. This boat did over 82 mph and won many State and Australian championships. Lets us know how you get on. From information on this post Fast Fred is the expert on these motors.

Hi 75luva.
Good that you are from sydney as this brings another 850cc mono to nsw. In queensland they race a class for your type of boat being the 850 cc visually stock which allows for modified 75hp OMC's.Are you considering raceing this boat in APBA championships as the class you would race in would be the 1250 cc Super Sports. You may consider the bridge to bridge race in May 2014 and discuss with Upper Hawkesbry Powerboat club re the eligable class. I would suggest the you post a thread on the Oz Boats forum regarding racing a wingboat with an FT 19s. There are plenty of ex wing boat drivers that may be able to give you advice. As you have a 50 hp boat this would be able to race in the 800cc class. I would like to see a photo of your 50 hp boat and may be able to advise on hull type. Please keep me informed re the progress of these boats.

But I am in process of getting a bobs low water pick up to fit as there is o nose cone.
So I don't think I pt will be ready for the bridge this year.I was going to talk to the uhpbc and see what there thoughts of class to run .
As for Racing I would love to get back into it again awesome times to be had, yes I will post on aus boat
.and as for the 50hp boat it's a Howard built boat Ricky Howard built it as a yr 12 project and none have been made the same since

Hi 75 luva.
So you are located near Brooklyn NSW. I am not far being at Narara just north of Gosford. My first bridge to bridge with the FT 19s in about 1978 or there abouts was completed in a time of 53 minutes 40 seconds for the 68 mile course. I have not worked out the average speed. The uhppc are usually open to conducting a new class provided that at least 3 boats contest that class. You should try the utmost to contest this race as this is a fantastic race. If your motor is singing to its potential you should be able to do arround the 53-54 minute mark. Once you get your motor singing you should have great fun. You may contact me at anytime if you require any assistance or advice or I maybe able to pop down one day and have a look at your motor and advise on exactly what you have. Just give me a call on 43291583.

If you lived anywhere near New Jersey, you'd understand. The Governor is in deep doodoo over one of his hence men (hence lady, actually) deliberately closing off the GWE bridge to punish the local major who didn't support Christi in his election.

It's been over ported buy a previous owner
Has ft front and exhaust but they have cut the deflector off the exhaust plate and not cut the bridge out of the block.
So time to build up a complete ft well thats the plan
Dropped the 60hp I have here on to the 15"mid as a back up till she's done properly

Hi Fred
v4/v6 are the same 4 over 4 down angle reeds, same block that goes in a down angle FT or any 2cyl omc, must have a weird inlet manifold/red plate to hold them straight in a straight in?
same reed as a CCC maybe but what is that?

I appreciate your reply or lack there of. Could you be more vague..... I am very aware that parts on these builds derive from factory parts.... Usually modified by someone. No worries, I've found someone who can modify a mid-section for me.

Fast Fred
07-20-2014, 01:55 PM
all the mods are done in the power head, the only thing moded in the mid is the tuna. maybe be a bit more specific on what you are lookin to do.

Fast Fred
07-20-2014, 02:56 PM
the factory made 15" mids, you can chop a 20"

Mod40yammy
07-20-2014, 04:42 PM
I thought I was pretty specific. I asked if you made mods to Yamaha 70 mid sections.... Meaning cutting them down to 15". Someone said you had a jig to do so. Just inquiring if you did that kind of work or not. But I found a guy in South Carolina that does it. Calhoun Marine.

Thanks!!

Fast Fred

Would love to have a stock mid, but unfortunately here in the states they didn't produce a 15" mid for a Yamaha 70. Can you order one?? Be glad to pay you for it?? I just picked up a 20" mid, but I'm gonna have to pay another $700 to have it cut down. $300 sounds pretty cheap right now.

Fast Fred

Mod40yammy
07-20-2014, 05:40 PM
Will be mounting it to a Yamaha ProV 50 transom bracket. You can get the short shaft swivel for that motor, but Calhoun Marine can also cut down the swivel of the long shaft during the cut down of the mid section also.

I'd much rather just buy one already done and I'm like you. There is nothing better than from the factory.

Well that's why I was asking, I saw in the forum where you were the "Go To" guy, but I like to go to the horses mouth for first hand information and hear it directly from them.

I have a 20" mid section with a F50 4-stroke lower unit also 20" that will need to be cut down. Using a Pro50 tilt trim unit. Building on a powerhead at the moment.

Some years ago I had some casted from a plug that I made modelled off the 5 X 5 31M manifold being solid without the cut outs and with the reed opening reduced to take the 4 X 4 reed blocks. I still have the casting plug and can have some casted up if required. These would require machining to the required measurements. I do not have a price, but the foundry that I use quotes $30 AU for set up and $7 AU per kilo. I will try and post a picture if I can. I think that I have one but if I am unable to post a picture here send me an E-Mail and I will take a picture using the phone and E-Mail it to you. Would not be able to do this until the weekend as it is at my sisters place.

Email sent, did you ever do a straight in crankcase as I have seen a photo of a non factory one I think 850 had it in Tassie

Steves Jem
08-06-2014, 04:47 AM
Powerabout

Got your E-Mail. Regarding the straight in crankcase, I played around a bit with having a pattern taken off the genuine 31M straight front and cutting it to fit a standard 3 cylinder crankcase. That was over 20 years ago. Did not precede with it as I retired shortly afterwards. There is a bit of machining required. Basically describing it is one casting which takes the inlet manifold and 3 legs that take the reed cages opening. The legs are cut to the shape of the standard 3 cylinder crankcase and the crankcase cut to take the legs. These are then welded and excess material removed and reshaped. That was the intention but the project was never finished or continued with. I still have the casting moulds and I think that I may still have I somewhere in my sisters garage. I will send a picture to you over the weekend. 850 in Tassie got his Mod 50 motor from overseas and in the late 80's early 90,s a few guys in northern NSW and Qld played around with manufacturing a couple of straight fronts but then purchase the genuine item. If it was 850cc racer, the thread that it would have appeared on would have been ""My 850 Kilo Motor""

I dont think Cees had moulds/dies for much just drawings as I know Seaway has had to make stuff from drawings
Tons of stuff from 2nd Effort was crushed and not shipped to Cees says our Kiwi mate Philmyrna that worked there.
He seems to be MIA I hope he is ok?

This hull with a stock 90 will do 70+0r- with the right tweaks this could be a hard launching plenty fast sleeper!

Hey fred when you dis the yamarude conversion how did you overcome the lengh of the shaft into the yamaha swivel.
I just pulled mine down to trial fit and found its not long enough to get the circlip on the lower of swivel shaft ?
Did you take some meat off the top where there is some free metal to be removed ?
Thanks lindsay

Yeah fred thats correct
I have taken the lip off the lower part of it but it still dosent allow the shaft to pop through enough to get circlip on
Cheers for the quick reply ill do a bit more playing around today

Had the same issue with mine after cutting the lip so I machined a sliver off the steering arm and I cut a pocket into the bottom of the bottom mount for the C clip, some people tell me they don't have those issues with the conversion, go figure I would.

Mike i took some offf the steering tube and lower of swivel bracket to get it to allow circlip to fit
Took some time but its together now

Hey guys nice motor. I have a 1993 Johnson 15" like new. Rebuilt top end 0.020 over. I have a set of 1994 50 Carbs with 55d Jets, 50 Reed cages, and a 50 head. Do I need to relieve the exhaust tuner ? The 40 / 50 tuners both have the same p / n's. Can anyone cut me a 50 head to be SST45 specs are just under to run 87 oct fuel? Please feel free to cal me at 337-764-5534, my name is Bobby from Louisiana. Thanks !!

If you are only going to run the motor on 87 oct. it's best to leave the head stock, the more you raise the compression the higher the octane has to be, oh she will run on 87 but for how long? The SST45 runs on 100 oct. min..

apba rules dont allow 100octane, its pump gas only

Hey guys I am new here. Been looking at some of your mods to the triples. I have a 93 Johnson 40 J40EETB stock. Fresh top end 0.020 over new rods pistons etc... I put 50 carbs with 49D mains & 31 & 29 air, 50 reed stops with CCMS fiberglass reeds. No performance increase. My uncle has a 1990 48 stock on the same boat and he smokes my tail. He's turnin a 11 3/4 x 17 at 6000 RPM with boat loaded two people. Motor will turn 6500 but he stays out of it. I have same setup only turnin 5800 and I am not on the rev limiter. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Bobby... my # 337-764-5534 if you have time to talk...

Check the easy stuff first...check that butterfly's open fully at wot, due a leak down test, I know you said it's fresh but doesn't mean the rings set. Are you turning the same prop as your uncle?

Been a while since I messed with the jetting on my 2 cylinder but seems like 49 mains seem pretty small for 50hp carbs seems like the 50's I had used 54 mains stock. Might just be a different model but have you checked the plugs to see what they look like?

Hey Rude thanks for the reply. I have another set of carbs off a 1990 48 with 55D mains & 56 low speed jets. These carbs are not the all metal body they have the plastic top. Gonna run when weather gets better. I read alot about this motor and I am wondering if the exhaust port timing is different on the 48 & 50. If so I may reun better with the stock 40 carbs & reed stops. Hey give me a call if you get time. Bobby @ 337-764-5534. Thanks

920cc with the Mod 50 straight front. A lot of guys here in AU in the 90's ran similar power heads with a great deal of success. I had one on the stock SST60 mid section and nitro gear box. The difference between the stock SST60 and this engine was 1,000 rpm. Ran a kilo averaged 88mph on my Mono and got a one way speed of over 90mph. Had great fun outrunning the F3 tunnels with quick foots to the first buoy and did beat a few of the slower F3 boats.

Just out of curiosity... what would i be searching for if i wanted to use the 4 over 4 or 5 over 5 reed block front half on a 56ci? Converting my motor to EFI via microsquirt and im not racing so im not tied to any rules or regs.

Wiseco forged replacement OMC 49.9 Mod-50 pistons are now available. They are improved versions of the #10908 previously supplied by the late Phil McDaniel. Designed for use with the Mod-50 or RD-series (40HP) “long” con rod, these pistons include a .120” top ring land, pre-machined boost and finger ports, plus hard anodized pin bores and fire dome. Each piston kit includes wrist pin & retainer clips and steel keystone rings. Size offerings include standard (3.000” bore), +.020”, +.030”, +.040”, and now +.050” oversize. Pricing is $135 each.

Taking orders now. Please reply with your request. Thanks,

Breaking news: +.065” oversize Mod-50 replacement pistons now available!

Wiseco just approved manufacture of +.065” oversize pistons for the 49.7 CI OMC loop triple. This means you can breathe new life into run-out or damaged +.040” blocks, creating a 51.9 CI monster! Bore sizes now available include: Standard, +.020”, +.030”, +.040”, +.050” and +.065”. Notes:

1) The +0.065” piston is legal for APBA 850cc Mod and NBRA Super-E classes which share a maximum +0.070” bore size. Minor file fitting of +.065” piston rings required.
2) Pistons require use of OMC Mod-50 (3/4” pin bore) or RD-Series 40 HP (5/8” pin bore) “long” connecting rods. “Skinny needle” wrist pin bearing conversion kits are required for the 5/8” pin bore RD-Series 40 HP connecting rods.
3) The Mod-50 replacement piston includes a flat top fire dome design that requires use of the 70 HP service cylinder head with pocket style combustion chambers.

Commitments through June 1 will be at the introductory price of $135/piston kit which includes the Wiseco forged aluminum piston with hard coat anodized pin bores & fire dome, wrist pin & retaining clips, and semi-keystone steel piston rings. So don’t delay; place your order now!

Best of luck with your engine projects,

Tim
