In response to my question to a bidder on eBay I got this answer about a padded 6 cylinder Merc block:

(I plan to) reassemble it and put it back on the boat that I had Quincy build it for in 1965. I ran this engine in 1965 on a 13' McDonald cabover and in 1966 on a 13' Jones cabover. Both of which I still have along with 2 6 cylinder loopers ( #'s 1 and 2) along with another 13' Jones and a 15' Jones Cabovers.
I think I paid my for it the other day than I paid to have it made in 1965.
