J, Before offering you some info. to help, I need to know 2 things. What type ignition(pack,stator,etc) are you running and where are you from?? Phil

Since 1925, about 150 different racing outboards have been made.
Just keep in mind that set up, and props are more important than th HP numbers. All the basic stuff works well on that engine. Give us all the details of the whole rig.
in stock form where should I be revving the Yamaha 40HP? 5500? 5800? I'm going to get it dialed in and running good and get a good baseline number before i go to the next step.. hoping for mid 40s in stock form.
step 2 I will be going with 50 HP carbs/tuner, better reeds and possibly shaving the head.
