    Default New boat

We are making a 12' shallow Vee with a small pad to put a 30HP OMC tweeked to a 35. Its a rope start right now but can easy be made elctric and install a trim unit. Hell I got $60 in the motor and you can still see the factory hone lines in the sleeves and the piston tops were still aluminum color, no time on the motor..........

It's gunna be the terror of Lake Hodges with the intent that more can be made and raced.....Probably not APBA races....

My thoughts are to make this boat a Mod VP, but, don't have much other than a guess on how wide and deep to make the tunnels, and should the gunnel be an inch or so shallower than the bottom line assuming the bottom would be a Vee???

I was gunna use a Glen L plan, but that is a Vee plan....I'm talking Mod VP mini here. The size of the tunnels is going to be critical, and thats what I needed the starting points with. i can calculate the lift and volume with basic mathmatic equations, but, at best, it would be an educated guess....

Or....Do I take a Stoker, or Hyrdostream like Capenzee has, and just scale it down and build it????

I have a 14 foot vee bottom that I raced as an OPC Family E boat in the 60's. That is when OPC stood for Outboard Pleasure Craft. This boat was known as a Curtis Craft, made in Miami, Fla. The sister ship held the APBA speed record at the time. Name of the boat "Paper Tiger". The boat has a pad and the builder at the time called it a Ski Vee. My kids have been running an old 45 Hp Merc 4 cyl. on it and it has proven safe and a lot of fun. Chad Hill and my son ran it all over Big Bear one week-end. It was also raced as a "36". I ran it once out here in California as a "36" at a race on a little lake called "Lake Delores" and won what was dubbed as the "regional championship". This boat is not for sale as I am going to bring it back to life with a 4 cyl. 65 Merc on a Parker housing with some kind of a speedmaster on the bottom. It will also have an electric start. If you were interested in taking measurements, be my guest. I would love to see a small cu. in. class started that would fit right into our COR classes. I believe we ran about 41 mph with a 36 cu. in. OMC on the boat. 48 with the 44 cu. in Merc. and I hope to hit over 50 with the 650 on the back. It has been converted to a sit down with a bucket seat--I believe it is exactly what you are looking for--and it is great in rough water. I don't believe a scaled down mod-vp would pack enough air to lift it out of the water. As I said you are welcome to come take a look, or ask Ron about it. He has been slathering over it since he saw it run at Big Bear. Rod

    Rod:

Is the bottom a Mod VP style? What I'm after is the tunnel dimensions. I'm stretching here, but a 12 footer, nose come and the right prop, I want to see 50 with a 35 OMC. Gunna use a barn door hinge with a bunge cord for a gas pedal so you know it will be fast.

In my opinion, your wasting your time with a black motor on your boat.

Stick a 3 hole OMC on it and run 50 all day long. Goeff Briggs set a Family E record in a 13' Checkmate about 1970 at 49.6 something, well before all the three hole tweekage took place.

    But, run whatcha brung, right?

So, if your boat has tunnels in the bottom, let me know and I would love to come up and measure it up. Thanks for the offer.

Sorry Bill. my Curtis Craft very much resembles the Avitar of 850cc racer. No tunnel, just a vee bottom with a pad. Rod
