I often wonder who was first with the cigar trick? As far back as I can remember, Henry Wagner from Fresno Claifornia always fired off from the pits with a cigar in his mouth. There was also an inboard driver from San Diego who did the same thing. Now I read where Ed Thirlby used to do the same thing. A funny story about me from Lake Ming, Bakersfield. In late 1962, I had a 3 day pass from Fort Ord, California. So as a young adult, I went to the races. Now being of age, I smoked just a little. I was in the market for a 'C' Racing Runabout rig. Since my day and Henry were good friends, Henry let me drive his 'C' outfit for testing. After my first trip, Henry corrected me on how to turn a racing runabout. Fueled up and I went for another test run. I nearly lost it on the back straightaway. When I returned to the pits, the look on Henry's face told me I was in trouble. I took of my helmet and Henry just busted out laughing. He commented "cigars sonny". Took me a while to figure it out. I tried to imitate Henry, only I used a cigarette! Burnt my lips so bad, the ambulance driver had to look at them.
Here is the July issue.
